Mexico’s ultimate playground
The region surrounding the city of Ensenada is filled with activities for relaxing and more daring outdoor adventures. Opportunities abound every day of the year, from spectacular hiking and rock climbing to sport fishing and surfing. And from January through late spring, you won’t want to miss the gray whales making their annual—and always spectacular—visit to Ensenada’s coastline.
Kayaking at La Bufadora
La Bufadora, which translates to “blowhole,” is a rare phenomenon on the coast near Ensenada where a large sea geyser spews water over 70 feet into the air, making a loud sound that resembles that of a whale’s blowhole—hence the geyser’s name. One of the experiences at La Bufadora is taking a guided sea kayak tour from La Bufadora to Todos Santos Islands—an island about 12 miles off the coast of Ensenada. Tours can be arranged with Expediciones de Turismo Ecológico y de Aventura (MexOnline.com/ecotur.htm).
Gear up and go for a dive
Scuba diving enthusiasts can participate in private excursions departing from several points in Ensenada. Visit nearby Todos Santos Island to view thriving sea life and intricate rock formations or dive near La Bufadora, where visibility ranges from 60 to 120 feet offering amazing views of coral and vertical rock pinnacles (Almar Dive Shop, +52 646.178.3013).
A glorious day at the parque
Two renowned national parks are located just outside Ensenada— Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857 and Parque Nacional Sierra Pedro Mártir. Constitución de 1857 used to be an old mining area, but now it’s a haven for experienced hikers and bikers with its rugged trails. The high mountains and serene pine forests in the park make for challenging excursions, with stunning views of the mountain ranges and Lake Hanson.
Parque Nacional Sierra Pedro is home to Baja California’s tallest peak – the Picacho del Diablo. A hike to the summit calls for a guided overnight camping and hiking experience. Tours of both parks can be arranged with Expediciones de Turismo Ecológico y de Aventura (Mexonline.com/ecotur.htm).
World-class waves
At Todos Santos Island, 12 miles west of Ensenada, only the most experienced surfers dare to ride waves. The Island’s coasts, known for creating waves that tower over 30 feet, have been the venue for several professional surfing contests. Less experienced surfers can try spots like San Miguel Beach, 3 M’s (Tres Emes in Spanish) or Stacks. Gear rental, private guides and lessons can be arranged with San Miguel Surf Shop in Ensenada (+52 646.178.1007).
The art of deep-sea fishing
One of Mexico’s most important sportfishing ports, Ensenada provides deep-sea fishing for a wide variety of abundant sea life. The waters off Ensenada and Todos Santos Bay are known for extraordinary fishing adventures and numerous private charters are available from Ensenada for day or overnight fishing trips, including Baja California Tours (+52 646.454.7166) and Ensenada Sportfishing Works (EnsenadaSportfishingWorks.com).
